|Sokolov, former German Falkenau, is a town of 24.500 inhabitants, located in the nortwestern Bohemia, the Egerland. After the first World War the Egerland and Falkenau, still part of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, changed the status, now it was part of the new founded Czechoslovakia. In 1938 under German administration of the so called Reichsgau Sudetenland. After 1945 the majority of German inhabitants were killed or evicted.
New settlements of people from East-Slovakia, Sinti and Romanies.
The region is characterized by rich natural sources. Since the Middle-Ages we find mining working.
Caused by the mining, the character of the landscape has changed the last two centuries. From the middle of 18. century to the end of the 20. century, the coal mining declined.
In the western part of the Sokolov region, the Cheb brazier, the mining is closed. The terrain will be recultivated, an artificial lake is built.
We find a city without character, without identity.
The city lost something on its way through history, what is not to be found anymore.
What is the typical attribute, or better, which elements compose the city?
In a first step we will do an extensive analysis of the city by using the knowledges and instruments of URBAN IMMERSION.
In a second step we will compare this findings with the statistical datas, the personal perceptions and the habits of the local population.
Is there any correlation between the lack of built identity and social identification?
In a third step we will project in different locations of the city: by building, social, functional, spatial, cultural, by landscape etc.
The analysis of a real city enables to find superior principles of the urban plan and its typical patterns. It enables to recognize them, to read them and to interpretate them.
To invent a scenario of a spatial structure by a dramaturgical strategy by creating an atmosphere. This implicates a first, new vision of the future in a spatial situation - a development of milieu, a setting without formal bondages.
